School leadership is rarely straightforward. Neither is my advice.
After more than forty years in education, including twenty-four years as a school Principal, I’ve learned that the most important leadership decisions rarely come with a neat set of instructions.
Today, I work with Principals, aspiring leaders, executive teams and school governing bodies, bringing independent judgment, practical wisdom and a deep understanding of the realities of school leadership.
Every school is different. Every leader is different. And the advice should reflect that.
Schools are complex places. The decisions that matter most often involve competing priorities, difficult conversations, imperfect information and people who care deeply about the outcome.
I’ve spent much of my professional life navigating those realities, first as a Principal and subsequently working alongside leaders across a wide range of schools.
My approach is straightforward. I listen carefully, ask questions that matter, challenge thinking when it’s needed and work with people to find practical ways forward.
Sometimes that means helping a Principal work through a difficult decision. Sometimes it’s supporting an aspiring leader to take the next step. At other times, it’s working with a governing body or executive team to address a challenge that has been sitting in the too-hard basket.
Whatever the circumstances, the starting point is the same: understand the school, understand the people and exercise good judgment.
